Qualifying Events


Qualifying Events

If you want to make a benefit or dependent change as a result of a qualifying event during the year, you must contact your organization's Human Resources/Benefits Office to request the coverage change. Generally, most requests for qualifying event enrollment changes must be made within 30 days of the qualifying event. It is the employee's responsibility to file an enrollment change form and provide required supporting documentation with your Human Resources/Benefits Office within the required timeframe, or you must wait until the next annual Open Enrollment.

Qualifying events include, but may not be limited to:

  • Birth or adoption of a child

  • Marriage/Civil Union

  • Divorce

  • Employment of spouse

  • Involuntary loss of spouse coverage

  • Spouse's employment termination

  • Child now eligible for coverage

  • Death of a spouse or dependent

  • Spouse becomes a State of Delaware employee

If enrolling a spouse or other dependent for the first time, you will be required to submit a Birth Certificate(for Dependents Only), Marriage Certificate, Social Security numbers or other required documentation as applicable within 30 days of the request.
