Keytwan Brooks, Department of Transportation

Mr. Brooks is a Fixed Route Bus Operator and in April he was approaching a stop when he saw a gentleman sitting on the pedestrian bridge. He jumped out of his bus to see if this young gentleman was okay. The young man said he was not okay. Mr. Brooks called 911 and continued to talk to the young man. Mr. Brooks and several others were able to talk him into coming down before help arrived. Mr. Brooks later said, “I truly believe God put me in the right place at the right time. I pray this young man gets the much-needed help he seeks.”

Justin Sauble, Department of Transportation

Mr. Sauble is a Conservation Tech V and in April, one of his employees was hit by a vehicle while working. Later that employee recalled, “...when it all happened he jumped right into action. Not only did he secure the scene and, with no regard for himself, he quickly called 911, our Superintendent, and quickly ran to my side to make sure I was okay. He took his shirt off and proceeded to make me a sling for my arm all while making sure I was not going into shock. Though I was not seriously hurt, other than my right arm and leg, he was outstanding in the action he took.”

Robert Stevens, Department of Transportation

Mr. Stevens is an Equipment Operator III and in March, he and another employee responded to a 10-10 (Accident with property damage). The driver of a vehicle had suffered a heart attack and crashed into a trash truck. Mr. Stevens reacted quickly and began to administer CPR until the paramedics arrived. Mr. Stevens was credited with saving the driver's life with his quick response and application of his first aid training. His nominator said, “Not even the threat of the Coronavirus would prevent him from assisting someone in his or her time of need. Bob is a true hero.”

Stewart Megee, Department of Transportation

Mr. Megee is a Survey Crew Chief and in October he came upon an accident scene involving a tractor trailer and a car. The car was on fire and the driver was still in the vehicle. Mr. Megee and the driver of the tractor trailer fought the fire using their fire extinguishers, while another individual was able to extract the injured driver out of the destroyed vehicle. Sussex County EMS contacted the South District Engineer shortly after the accident to say that if it hadn’t been for Mr. Megee’s efforts and that of the other members of the public that the injured individual would have perished in the vehicle.

Fred Beach, Steven Beck, Walter Bruhl, William Fintak, Jennifer Gabrielle, and Ronald “Skip” LeMieux with volunteer “Chief” Larry Keller, Department of State, Veteran’s Cemetery

On May 8, 2020, staff at the Veterans Cemetery heard shots ring out. Military Honors are often provided for the interment of veterans, but these shots didn’t sound the same. Crew member Steven Beck looked around and witnessed the active shooting. He shouted to the rest of the crew, “Someone call the police!” Jennifer Gabriele, the grounds foreman, dialed 911 and, according to the State’s Active Shooter Training, the crew quickly made their way to the maintenance compound and locked themselves in. Meanwhile, “Chief” Larry Keller, was volunteering in the mechanic shop and rushed to the scene to provide life-saving aid to the victims until the police arrived.
